Over the Easter holidays, Broomwood was proud to host a special netball tournament in memory of former pupil Clarissa Nicholls, who tragically passed away in May 2023 following a sudden cardiac arrest whilst hiking in France.
Clarissa was a much-loved member of the Broomwood community. Not only was she a pupil here, but her mother also worked at the school, making the connection to Broomwood particularly meaningful. She was known for her passion for sport and her love of teamwork, always bringing energy, determination and encouragement to those around her.
In tribute to Clarissa, friends organised a netball tournament on Saturday 11th April to celebrate her life and raise funds for Cardiac Risk in the Young (CRY). The event, held at Broomwood Prep, brought together around 80 participants and supporters for an afternoon filled with sport, remembrance and community spirit.
Six teams competed in a round robin tournament, followed by semi-finals and a closely contested final. The matches were fast-paced and competitive, but most importantly reflected the camaraderie and team spirit that Clarissa so valued. Congratulations go to Ella’s team, who were crowned overall winners on the day.
The event was expertly umpired by Kaitlin Lawrence, a former Super League player for Surrey Storm. Kaitlin’s presence was particularly inspiring; after being diagnosed with arrhythmogenic cardiomyopathy, she has become a powerful advocate for cardiac screening in sport and played a key role in making screening compulsory within the Netball Super League.
Alongside the tournament, a bake sale featuring a wonderful selection of homemade cakes and treats proved hugely popular. Information from CRY, including posters, leaflets and t-shirts, was also available throughout the day, helping to raise awareness of young sudden cardiac death and the importance of screening.
The event raised an impressive £1,012, which will go towards supporting CRY’s vital work in funding research, promoting cardiac screening and supporting affected families.
It was a truly uplifting afternoon, with friends coming together to celebrate Clarissa’s life and legacy in a way that reflected her love of sport and community. Well done to everyone involved in organising such a meaningful occasion. There are hopes to make the tournament an annual event in her memory.
